Information About Epiros Region
Epirus covers the northwest corner of Greece and stretches out from the Ionian Sea to Macedonia and Thessaly. A region with a beautiful coast line that meets the imposing wild mountains of the inland.
It main characteristic is its natural beauty, the historical monuments and museums, the picturesque villages, the traditions, music and hospitality of the locals. Even according to mythology the borders of Epirus extended from Ambracia Gulf in the south up to the Genousos River in the north and from the Ionian Sea in the west to Mt. Pindos in the east.
The Genousos River divided Epirus from the former district of Illyria but today the section of Epirus which lay between the Gerousos River and the Greek-Albanian boarders is Albanian territory.
Epirus is generally a mountainous area which includes the larges mountain range in Greece, Pindos, whose highest peak is 2600m.
