Korinthia Archaeological Sites - Akrocorinth

The oldest castle of Peloponnesus, which was used during the revolution of 1821 and played a defining role in Greek history. The excavations began in 1961 from the American Archaeology School. The most important findings were the temple of Afrodite, the smaller temples of Dimitra and Kori, the shrines of Ilios (Sun), the fountain of "upper Peirinis". The findings are few as the castle was in constant use over the years and kept being reconstructed.

The most ancient city was destroyed in 146 B.C.. The temple of Apollo was built in 530 B.C.. The marketplace was in rectangular shape, 160m long and 70m. wide. The main buildings surround the southern gallery. Just outside the main archaeological site you find the Odeum , which was built at the end of the first century A.C. and was renovated by Herodes Atticus, who by adding the courtyard with the surrounding galleries brought the odeum closer to the theatre.

The first substantial buildings of early Corinthian civilization were found in this area. The remarkable temple of Hera, under the construction of todays lighthouse. The well known city of Oenoe was located in the area now known as Schoinou.

It is located at the same barrow as Vasilikos, 4 kml. Southeast of Kiato. The theatre and roman spa are of the most important findings of Ancient Sikyon. Sikyon was built at the highest plateau. That is were the theatre was built. Northwest of the theatre you find the stadium.

Anastasios Orlando discovered ancient Stymfalia, with the foundations of a building with circular walls. At the lake of Stymfalia traces of the Hadrianic aqueduct are preserved. Finally, the Frankish church, the ruins of which now dominate the region, has been built largely by ancient materials, probably from the Temple of Artemis which is estimated to have been in the same area.
