Information About Thraki Archaeological Sites
This is the largest preserved Byzantine town of Greek Thrace. The Ioustinian Castle situated in the northwestern part of town was reestablished by in 751 by the Byzantine Emperor Konstantine V but was totally destroyed by the Bulgarian Czar Kalogiannis in 1206. During 1341-7 Ioannis VI Katakouzinos was crowned emperor of the town and used it as the base for his operations.
The building of tombs in the are of ancient Thrace begins in the Prehistoric period and continues through antiquity. One of the tombs found was built at the beginning of the 2nd century AD south of the river Ardas in Ploutos between the villages known today as Mikri Doksipara, Zoni and Chelidona of the Kyprinos Municipality in the west region or northern Evros. The tomb is 60m long and 7.5m high and covered the burial and incarceration of the members of a wealthy family of landowners.
Medieval Mesimvria is one of the oldest towns in Europe. It was inhabited by various tribes throughout time: Thracians, Greeks, Romans, Bulgarians and Turks. The monumental walls of the Hellenistic and Byzantine period, the richly decorated temples of Mesimvria and the houses of the 18th and 19th century portray the magnificence of the town’s past.
On the road towerds Feres along the ancient river Samia you can see the Byzantine water towe which carried water from the far away spring in the Moni settlement. The two grand chambers are 5m high, 7m long and 1.3m in width. It was built over 800 years ago from flint stone under the supervision and care of Isaakios Komninos.
