Information About Arcadia Archaeological Sites

Arcadia Archaeological Sites - Temple of Artemis

Arcadia Archaeological Sites - Temple of Artemis

On a slope of the mountains Psili Rahi at an altitude of 1300m you come across the ruins of the Temple of Artemis. In 1907 the architectural remains of a marble temple were found along with dozens of artifacts, offerings to the goddess, fragments of pottery, copper arrows, little clay statues of women and many other specimens that indicated this was a place of worship of Artemis, the Arcadian goddess.

Based on the findings it seems the goddess was worshiped here since 900 BC. Around 540 BC a small Dorian temple was built. The width was 6.5m and the length 13m with 4 columns on the east side and another 4 on the west. The temple was made entirely out of marble and is in fact the most ancient marble temple found in Greece.

The archaeological site includes the largest ancient theatre of Greece, the Thersilion Assemply Hall, the ruins of the ancient Agora with the Temple of Zeus Soter, the Stoa of Philip and the Stoa of Myropolis. The central monument is the Ancient Theatre which portrays the strength of the Arcadian Federation and the Great City.

Arcadia Archaeological Sites - Ancient Mandinia

The archeological site of Ancient Mandinie is located 14km form Tripolis on the Mandinian Plateau in Paleopolis. Ancient Mandinia, along with Tegea, were the most significant cities of Arcadia for long time. The ruins of this ancient city were discovered during the 1887-89 excavations of the French Archeological School. The site includes the Ancient Theatre, the ruins of the Zeus Temple, the Assembly Hall and the ruins of the Agora.

The excavations of the French archeologist Fougeres brought to light the almost intact city walls with their towers and gates (126 towers and 10 gates) as well as the Agora, a rectangular space where all the main arteries of the city led to.

Arcadia Archaeological Sites - Astros Castle

At the port town of Astros there is a castle on the south tip of the hill that overlooks that bay. The castle was built by the Franks and was later on transformed into a defense complex by the Ottomans. It has a four-sided ground plan and maintains part of the fortification and one of its mighty towers as well as two of the external gates.
