Local Products
Materials that you might not try while staying here, you definitely need to take with you when leaving the island are:
• jars with traditional sweet candy, made
of zucchini flesh, honey and almonds
• local cheeses such as "xerotyri", cream
cheese and "touloumotyri", prepared
with great care in the traditional manner
• thyme honey from Milos
• scrumptious tomato paste, production from Milos
• capers
• barley homemade breads (the barley breads were made from the new harvest, initially dived
in sea water and subsequently completed with tomato)
The most representative species of the kitchen of Milos are the "pies" filled with dried pepper cheese or cream cheese with mint, the fragrant "karpouzopita"
- a traditional sweet pie made with watermelon - and of course the "sweet candy" made from zucchini flesh, with honey and almonds. The sweet candy is traditionally served at weddings and engagements by the mother of the bride. Honey symbolizes the sweet life that the couple will live, and the almonds symbolize the fertility.
In the many restaurants, grill houses and wine taverns of the island, you have plenty of options. You can taste everything, from fresh fish to international cuisine. We strongly recommend you to try the delicious lobster pasta, grilled octopus or octopus in wine sauce, fresh fish, "ladenia" (savory pie with olive oil, tomato and
onion) and dishes made from local meats such as rooster in red sauce or in wine sauce, baked lamb with tomato paste and many other dishes.
