Architecture of Milos - Klima Village Traditional Villages

Klima, Mantrakia, Fyropotamos, Areti, Saint Constantine and Fourkovouni and Empourios are the main traditional villages of the island and are small fishing ports. They are built on small creeks, dug into soft rock or natural cavities of the rocks and have a rare island architecture.

Visiting them will leave you with the best impression, because the colours and the picturesque look are impressive. A special feature of these settlements are "wires", cave accommodation by the sea, painted in bright colours, which originally served to protect the fishing boats during the winter and during periods of bad weather, but then turned into houses of fishermen and summer accommodation.

Architecture of Milos - Firopotamos
Klima, is a traditional fishing village with few inhabitants and colourful two-storey houses in natural cavities of the rocks. On the ground floor, the so-called "wires" stored the boats of fishermen, while the families lived in the loft. Today, most of these "wires" are available for renting and are waiting for you, to be photographed surrounded by the playful colours and shades and cats lying lazily in the sun.

Fyropotamos, is a seaside village with a small but organized beach, suitable for swimming and fishing. There are many trees and creeks surrounded by "wires". In its edge, after the fishermen's houses, you will see the abandoned loading stairs and the church of St. Nicholas.

Architecture of Milos - Empourio Village
5 km northwest of Plaka, you will find another village with "wires" and holiday homes, the Mantrakia. The resort has rooms for rent, a restaurant and at a short distance you will find the beach of Sikia, a small beach about 150 meters with dark, grey pebbles and blue waters.

On the way to Pollonia, to your left, you will see a short detour which leads to the small quiet seaside village of Agios Konstantinos. The beach town is fairly quiet and beautiful, while on its right side, between the rocks, two small caves are formed where water goes in and out and they are ideal for exploring.

Empoureio is a small and quiet village on the northwest side of the island (17km from Plaka), once an important commercial centre. It is now almost deserted, has a small port, a picturesque, little tavern by the sea and a beach to swim in. It is suitable for nature lovers and people who hate the crowds, while you will find the also quiet beach of Fatourenas nearby.

Finally, Fourkovouni is a very small, fishing village with a small beach and colorful and "wires".
