AWARDED ISLANDS

For 2010 you suggested
Lefkada Island
in Ionian Islands

Beaches - Achivadolimni Achivadolimni

This is the largest beach of the island with white sand and deep blue shallow waters. There is organized camping and the beach is accessible by bus. It took its name from the pond located opposite and is full of clams.

Beaches - Lagkada Lagkada

This is the beach closest to the port of Adamas, with clean water and many trees for natural shade. It is a big golden/white, sandy beach and is organized.

Beaches - Sarakiniko Sarakiniko

The most famous beach of the island, thanks to the unique, moon shaped landscape. It has white volcanic rock formations with brilliant deep blue waters. There is a small natural harbour, enclosed between the rocks, with sand and green-blue waters.

The scenery is spectacular, with constant changes of volcanic materials and abundant fossils. Its name comes from the pirates who used it as shelter. (The bindings of the ships that are carved in the rock, are still preserved.) The white of the rocks and the lack of vegetation create a unique sense, that you will hardly forget.

Beaches - Papafragkas Papafragkas

Beside the ruins of the ancient city of Phylakopi, lie the three caves of Papafragas. The cave of Papafragas is a deep sea cave, where you can swim in turquoise waters among greyish cliffs that lead to the open sea.

The beach is small, encircled by huge lightly, coloured rocks and to get there you have to go down a steep carving on the rock. In Byzantine times it was used as a pirate hide-out and got its name from the last franc Priest who used the beach to guard his boat.

Beaches - Firopotamos Firopotamos

This is a coastal village with a small but organized beach, suitable for swimming and fishing. There are many trees and creeks surrounded by "wires". The beach is sandy and has a beach bar. In its end, after the fishermen's houses, you will see the derelict loading stairs and the church of St. Nicholas.

Beaches - Alogomantra Alogomantra

This is a strip of sandy beach, enclosed by high cliffs, which is not visible from the street. It has a rocky terrain and shallow green-blue waters. The formation of the beach reminds a paddock, thus taking the name of "Alogomantra".

Beaches - Kleftiko Kleftiko

Kleftiko or the "Thalassina Meteora" as many call it, is a set of greyish rocks with bizarre shapes and formations, caves and pits that were created over the centuries by wind and sea. To enjoy the crystal clear turquoise waters and the unique formations, you must come by boat or yacht. Kleftiko was formerly used as a refuge and a base for pirates and that is where its name comes from.

Beaches - Firiplaka Firiplaka

An extensive beach, with magnificent, gigantic, volcanic rocks, greyish, fine sand and white pebbles. It has shallow turquoise waters, a beach bar and sun beds with umbrellas. Firiplaka enables those who want to avoid the crowds to enjoy the splendour and beauty of the two most secluded beaches (if you continue past the first organized one), all you have to do is walk alongside the sea and the volcanic rocks.

Beaches - Agios Sostis Agios Sostis

This is an extension of the Beach of Provatas, it has a restaurant and some rooms for rent. It is a small sandy and shallow beach and owes its name to the chapel which is a little bit further up.

Beaches - Tsigkrado Tsigkrado

A beach surrounded by huge rocks with white sand and emerald waters. The access to this truly exotic beach is a relatively easy dirt road. To enjoy its beauty though, you should walk down the hill through a steep glide path which is covered with sand. The beach is not organized, but you can buy what is needed from the nearby beach of Fyriplaka.
