Information About the Dodecanese Islands Cities & Villages
Kastelorizo or Megisti is the only settlement on the island. It is built in the northeast end of the island. Take a stroll in the streets with the neoclassic mansions and the churches with baronial cupola and let yourselves relax in the charm of Megisti.
Moving on to Antimachia, a village 25 kilometres outside Kos town towards the central part of the island, you’ll see the Castle of Antimachia, the Windmill and the Traditional House museum, all of great interest. This village, carrying the same name for thirty centuries, also carries on several traditions.
Faliraki is considered one of the most cosmopolitan summer resorts in Rhodes. It is located just 12km from the island’s capital and is distinguished for its remarkable tourist infrastructure. It has one of the biggest and best-organized beaches in Greece. Water and extreme sports, water park, famous clubs and thousands of tourists.
Among the outstanding sightseeings is the archaeological site located in Sarandapihos, close to the village of Kalithies, which is believed to be part of the acropolis from archaic times. Erimokastro, near the sea with ruins of the archaic wall and the old monastery of Prophet Amos on a hill just outside Faliraki.
Lakki, the main harbor of Leros, lies just four kilometers southwest of Platanos; it is enclosed and secure and is one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean. It has up-to-date harbor installations and a separate section for the servicing of pleasure craft. It has its own special flavor, completely different to the rest of the island.
Around the 16 th century Skala was one of the most important commercial ports in the Mediterranean. It was originally made up of warehouses and maintenance facilities for local and incoming ships. The buying and selling of loot from pirates and the making and export of woman's stockings and embroidery were the major economical assets to the island and its people. At sunset everyone would return to their protected homes in Hora via the steps (skala). The first homes were built in the beginning of the 19th century when European ships chased off the pirates from Turkey, Arabia and other countries. The Greek government under military dictatorship in 1972 built the current port.
Skala is now the most populated and visited place on the island. It offers most of the public services and being the island's only port it has a selection of supermarkets, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, cafeterias, bars and everything you would expect to find in a commercial harbour.
