Information About the Ionian & Kythira Islands Museums
The Folklore and Cultural Museum is housed in a beautiful building, which was once an old generating station situated in Vathy, the island’s capital. The museum testifies to the life of the inhabitants of Ithaca during the colonial period of the island and exhibits fully assembled bedrooms, kitchen and sitting-rooms from that period.
The museum was constructed between the years of 1962 and 1965 in a place that was donated by the Municipality of Corfu, on the road of 1 Braila Armeni. Its main goal was the most successful collection of sculptures from Artemido’s church. In the year of 1994, two new showrooms were added, in which were exhibited the findings from the recent excavations of the town. The collections include findings from the excavations of the ancient town of Corfu, findings from the Corfu Kassiopi and findings from the excavations of Thesprotia.
The Historical and Folk Art Museum exists in the center of Argostoli and was established in 1962 by Eleni Kembitsi-Kosmetatou. The Museum exhibits the local costumes, furniture and embroidery of Kefalonia.
Other exhibits include heirlooms and other ecclesiastic items, pictures, paintings, maps, manuscripts, coins, jewels, silver and metal craftworks and much more. In the museum's basement, the Historical Archives of Kefalonia display historical manuscripts from the 16th-19th centuries, depicting several historical periods and an important collection of more than 3000 photos.
The Historical Museum of Paxoi was established by island’s Cultural Association in 1996. It is roofed under a traditional building of 1906. The exhibits reveal the island’s history, as it hosts findings from the prehistoric time and the classic ages, until Balcanian wars and the Epic of 1940. One of the most important exhibits is the Resolution of the Ionian Parliament for the addition of the Ionian Islands to the Greek State in 1864. The book of the Australian Archduke Ludovike Salvator, describing Paxous in every detail , when he visited there in 1884 - 1885.
The collection is housed in the post Byzantium church of the Assumption in Livadi that was donated by Diocese of Kithira. The collection consists of early Christian to post Byzantium examples of artistic works as: wall paintings, religious paintings, icons and objects used in religious ceremonies. There is also part of an early Christian mosaic floor that was in the ruins of the church of Agios Ioannis the Potamo.
